Abstract

A rigid polyurethane foam is produced by reacting an arylene di-isocyanate with a polyoxypropylene ether obtained by condensing 0,25-50 parts of propylene oxide with 1 part of a hexitol or a hexitol-water mixture containing up to 15% water. Specified hexitols are sorbitol, mannitol, dulcitol and iditol, and their mixtures may also be used. A list of suitable isocyanates is given, and optional ingredients are catalysts, e.g. tertiary amines and organo-tin derivatives; surfactants, e.g. silicones; and flame retardants, e.g. halogeno-organic compounds, antimony trichloride or phosphoro-organic compounds such as an aryl alkyl phosphonate.ALSO:A rigid polyurethane foam is produced by reacting an arylene diisocyanate with a polyoxypropylene ether obtained by condensing 0,25 to 50 parts of propylene oxide with 1 part of a hexitol or a hexitol-water mixture containing up to 15% water. Specified hexitols are sorbitol, mannitol, dulcitol and iditol, and their mixtures may also be used. A list of suitable isocyanates is given, and optional ingredients are catalysts e.g. tertiary amines and organo-tin derivatives; surfactants e.g. silicones; and flame retardants e.g. halogens-organic compounds, antimony trichloride or phosphors-organic compounds such as an aryl alkyl phosphonate. Cellularity may derive from a thermally unstable or a low boiling point component, or by adding water where a molar excess of di-isocyanate is used.
