[Also in Group XXXVI] A magnetic storage device comprises a conductive non-magnetic substrate 20 (Fig. 10), which may be of planar, cylindrical, tubular, ribbon-shaped or toroidal form, provided with a number of longitudinal grooves 21 so dimensioned and spaced that a square loop ferromagnetic coating 22 on the substrate has its easy direction of magnetization in the direction of the grooves. Where the grooves are arranged helically (Fig. 9), the easy direction is also helical and the device operates in the same way as a "twistor." The subtrate may consist of a conductive coating deposited on a glass, plastic or ceramic base. The ferromagnetic film 22 may be covered by a protective coating of copper 23. Details of the plating process and equipment are given.
