Abstract
876,194. Stuffing-box substitutes. DONLEY PRODUCTS Inc. March 23, 1960, No. 10287/60. Class 122 (5). A shaft or bearing race sealing assembly comprises two oppositely-directed bearing rings 21, 35, Fig. 1, which have flat bearing surfaces and are supported in spaced relation to each other, with the said bearing surfaces in contact with the surface to be sealed, upon flanges 27, 42 on two metal annular leaf springs 22, 36 which have opposed flanges 32, 46 for mounting the springs in position. The flanges 27, 42 on the springs 22, 36 provide conical seating surfaces for the bearing rings 21, 35 of such inclination that the bearing rings can be secured to them by a press fit. The sealing units can be press fitted into the outer race 15 of a bearing when the portions 28, 43 of the springs, which in the free state are at about an angle of 10 degrees to the plane of the springs 22, 36, become perpendicular to the axis of the shaft. The main portion of each of the springs 22, 36 comprises an outer bowed portion facing either inwardly or outwardly of the seal. The springs may be of stainless steel, brass, or suitable alloys. The bearing rings may be of a metal, ceramic, rubber or plastics material or of carbon impregnated with a metallic infusion and their bearing surfaces are lap finished and may be coated with a dry-film lubricant 38, which may be molybdenum disulphide; furthermore, the bearing rings may be provided with axial bores 37 to allow the circulating of air near the bearing surfaces. The bearing rings may, alternatively, be carried at the outer peripheries of the springs and the mounting flanges provided on the inner peripheries adjacent the shaft. When used as a shaft seal operating between a stationary element 51, Fig. 5, and a movable element 52, such as a collet housing or hub of a pump, the interfitting flanges 74, 75 can be welded together or they may be of corresponding frusto-conical shapes enabling them to be rightly press-fitted together. In the construction shown in Fig. 11, the interengaging flanges 111, 112 are of tapered form on the inner peripheries of the springs and are press-fitted together, and the outer flanges 121, 122 provide cylindrical bearing surfaces for the bearing rings 106, 107. A further arrangement for a shaft 130, Fig. 14, surrounded by stationary and rotatable elements 131, 132 comprises two seal units 134, 135 telescoped together by the tapered flanges 136 and comprising leaf springs 137, 138, bearing rings 139, 140 and reversely-flanged elements 141, 142.
