A method of making a transistor having a substantially flat emitter junction comprises removing the oxide from the aluminium of an emitter tab 8 comprising layers of nickel 12, steel 9, and aluminium 10, plating the aluminium with a layer 11 of nickel to prevent reoxidation, assembling the tab 8 with a pellet 7 of indium-lead alloy and a wafer 5 of N-type germanium, and firing the assembly to form an emitter junction, part of the aluminium being dissolved in the emitter alloy; a collector electrode 6 of indium &c. and a base ring 14 are alloyed at the same time. The tab 8 is blanked out of a nickel-steel-aluminium strip which has been etched in HF acid to remove the aluminium oxide and then immersed in an electroless nickel plating bath to provide layer 11. After firing the device is etched. The collector may be formed in a similar manner to the emitter.
