April 17, 1959 [April 24, 1958], No. 13257/59. Class 37. Capacitance or inductance is measured in a circuit in which the reactive component of the current flowing in a series resonant circuit is measured by means of a synchronous detector. The reactive component of the current falls rapidly to zero as resonance is approached, in contrast to the slowly varying resultant current. A circuit described for measuring an unknown capacitance C1 comprises series resonant circuit L1, C1 connected across a cable K having a self capacitance C2, and a source E having a frequency variable between 0.5 and 2.0 Mc/s. Capacitor C3 compensates for the current flowing through C2. The voltage U3 developed across C4 is displaced in phase by 90 degrees from the current in L1, C1 and has a component due to the reactive current in L1, C1 which is either in phase or in anti-phase with voltages U1, U1<SP>1> across the centre-tapped secondary winding of transformer T2. The resultant sum and difference voltages E1 and E2 of U3 and U1 and U1<SP>1> are amplified, rectified and subtracted, the resultant voltage being proportional only to the reactive component of the current in L1, C1 and being zero at resonance.
