Abstract

888,187. Electric tests. KELVIN & HUGHES Ltd. Nov. 18, 1960 [Dec. 16, 1959], No. 42846/59. Addition to 836,723. Class 37. In an apparatus for the electromagnetic testing of materials including means for establishing in a test coil 10 in which the specimen is located an alternating current inversely proportional to the frequency of the test signal, and means for deriving from the coil a signal proportional to the inductive component of the coil impedance and a signal proportional to the ratio of the change in the resistive component of the coil impedance to the test frequency for application to the respective deflecting elements of a cathode-ray tube, for producing a Forster diagram in the manner described in the parent Specification, the means for establishing the test current in the coil comprises a variable frequency generator 18 connected across a resistor 19 and capacitor 20 in series, the resistance of the former being much greater than the reactance of the latter, whereby the current therethrough is independent of frequency and the potential across the capacitor is inversely proportional to frequency; and means for applying the potential to the combination of the test coil 10 in series with a resistor 22 which is large compared with the reactance of the test coil so that the current through the test coil is substantially inversely proportional to frequency. The voltage at point 27 is subtracted from the voltage at point 26 in an adder circuit 29 after being phase inverted in a unit 28, the output voltage being where K is a constant relating the test current to frequency, L is the coil inductance, and #R the change in resistance. The two components are selected for application to the X and Y plates of a cathode-ray tube 30 by phasesensitive rectifiers 34, 35, fed also with reference signals in quadrature derived from a resistance capacitance circuit 24, 25 connected in parallel with the test coil 11. The paths to the phase-sensitive rectifiers include frequency changers supplied also from the variable oscillator 19 and 20 kc/s. amplifiers 33, 41.
