Abstract
Normally solid polymer compositions comprise solid polymers of ethylene or propylene, finely powdered carbon black and compounds of formulae (R2N,CS,S-)2Zn, in which R is an alkyl group having at least two carbon atoms or a cycloalkyl group, or: <FORM:0875601/IV (a)/1> in which -R1-R1- is an alkylene radical which forms a ring with the nitrogen atom. The carbon black is preferably a channel black. The zinc compound may be zinc dibutyldithiocarbamate, zinc pentamethylene dithiocarbamate, zinc dimethyl pentamethylene dithiocarbamate, zinc dipropyl dithiocarbamate or zinc dinonyl dithiocarbamate. The compositions may be prepared by mixing a slurry of the polymer, e.g. isotactic polypropylene, with a hydrocarbon solution of the zinc compound, evaporating the solvent and masticating the residue with the carbon black. The compositions may be used in the manufacture of films, fibres, pipes and sheets.
