A transfer sleeve 1, Fig. 1, for applying a resilient protector 22 to a pipe 23 comprises two semi-cylindrical portions 2, hinged together about a pivot 3. A cam member 17, pivoted by a pin 18 to a yoke 13, which is connected to the lower of the semi-cylindrical members 2 by a member 14, holds the members 2 in the cylindrical form shown in Fig. 1. When the cam member 17 is turned to release the pressure on the members 2, the protector 22 contracts and moves the members 2 into a frusto-conical form until edges 11 of the members 2 abut. The protector 22 can now readily slide from the transverse sleeve 1, which is preferably previously lubricated, on to the pipe 23. In a further embodiment the transfer sleeve 1<SP>1</SP>, Fig. 5, consists of a split sleeve having overlapping edges 26, 27. These edges are pivoted together by a pin 28. The sleeve is held in a cylindrical form by a latch 32 which engages a pair of guides 30, 31 and a socket element 38 which is on the overlapping portion 26. The latch 32 is attached to a lever 36 by a pin 33 which slides in a slot 35. When the latch 32 is withdrawn from the socket element 38 by moving the lever 36, the transfer sleeve assumes a frusto-conical shape, the edges overlapping until the edge 27 abuts a stop member 40. The resilient protector 22<SP>1</SP> now slides off on to the pipe 23<SP>1</SP> as before.
