Abstract

A hydrocarbon copolymer drying oil, prepared by sodium polymerization of 60%-90% of a 4-6 carbon conjugated diolefin with 40%-10% of styrene or a methyl or ethyl ring-alkylated homologue, and then epoxidized to an oxirane oxygen content of at least 0,25%, is reacted with a monocarboxylic hydrocarbyl acid of 7-20 carbon atoms under esterifying conditions (a) with enough acid to give a range of 1-2 mols acid per mol oxirane oxygen in the oil and (b) until an acid number below 40 is reached, the acid being selected from the group consisting of straight chain aliphatic acids of 8-20 carbon atoms, unsubstituted aromatic acids containing at least 7 carbon atoms, and alkyl substituted derivatives of these acids, rosin acids, and mixtures thereof. It is preferred that the oxirane oxygen content is from 1%-8% and the acid number is reduced to below 12.
