Abstract

874,676. Television. BUSH & RANK CINTEL Ltd. May 27, 1958, No. 9089/58. Class 4(3) Television apparatus comprises a plurality of simultaneously operable image forming optical paths 3, 4 between a single point in a scanning device I and a like plurality of image planes 7, 8 to -which said paths are respectively normal, and means for causing the optical axis of the scanning device to coincide selectively with any of the paths. In the embodiment illustrated, the scanning device comprises a cathode-ray tube flying-spot scanner and kinematograph films are located in planes 7 and 8, the cathode-ray tube being mounted so as to pivot about an axis lying in the effective screen surface so that it may be moved between positions B and C where the scanned area is disposed perpendicular to the respective optical paths. Both paths remain operative, that to which scanner is perpendicular being free of optical distortion whilst the other is subject to keystone distortion and loss of edge focus. The apparatus permits a changeover of transmission from one kinematograph film to another, the film for transmission, being scanned in the distortion free manner whilst the other is scanned in a distorted manner but with sufficient accuracy for preview and monitoring purposes. The films are viewed by photo-electric cells 9 and 10 whose outputs are applied to a transmitter 15 and monitor 16 through change-over switches 13, 14 which are coupled to the mechanism for angularly displacing cathode-ray tube 1 and arranged so that the "undistorted" signal is always applied to the transmitter and the "distorted" signal to the monitor. In a second embodiment of the invention, Fig. 2 (not shown), the cathode-ray tube flying-spot scanner is replaced by a camera tube and the photo-electric cells by light sources. Reference is also made (without giving details) to an arrangement for use with images reflecting rather than transmitting light. One or two additional optical paths may be provided in a plane perpendicular to those shown in Fig. 1.
