Abstract

Vinyl chloride is prepared by heating 1 : 2-dichloroethane at above 150 DEG C. in the presence of the hydrochloride or quaternary ammonium chloride derived from a tertiary amine. The catalyst (when a hydrochloride) may be prepared in situ by heating the dichloroethane in the presence of the tertiary amine. Amines specified are triethanolamine, tri-butylamine, trioctylamine, tridodecylamine, quinoline, collidine and pyridine.ALSO:Hydrogen chloride is recovered by conventional means from the dehydrochlorination of 1:2-dichloroethane accomplished by heating the dichloroethane at above 150 DEG C. in the presence of the hydrochloride or quaternary ammonium chloride derived from a tertiary amine. Amines specified are triethanolamine, tributylamine, trioctylamine, tridodecylamine, quinoline, collidine and pyridine.
