Abstract
An aqueous dispersion of a linear essentially unbranched, head-to-tail polypropylene having a content of crystalline polymer of from 50%-100% by weight is made by dispersing particulate polypropylene in water in the presence or absence of a dispersing or emulsifying agent. The size of the polymer particles is preferably from 0,1-20 microns. The aqueous dispersion may also contain a filler, pigment, or plasticizer. The particulate polymer may be obtained by grinding it in the presence of an oily material or by forming a solution of polypropylene in a solvent, e.g. trichloroethylene, emulsifying the solution in water and then removing the solvent by evaporation. The aqueous dispersion may be extruded into filaments and fibres or used as a protective coating, e.g. by removing the water after application to the surface and uniting the polypropylene into a coherent layer by heattreatment, or as an adhesive in laminates (see Group VIII).ALSO:Wires, plates, and cables are coated with an aqueous dispersion of a linear essentially unbranched head to tail polypropylene of crystalline content between 50 and 100%, and the coating after drying, consolidated under heat and pressure at a temperature above the softening point of the polymer. The coating may be applied by spreading with a knife, roller, or brush, or by spraying. The aqueous dispersion may contain dispersing agents, fillers, pigments, and plasticizers.
