Abstract

873,841. Automatic capacitance control systems. SIMPLEX WIRE & CABLE CO. Aug. 7, 1957 [May 13, 1957], No. 24912/57. Class 38 (4). The depth of cut of a rotary shaver 11 is adjusted so that the capacitance/unit length of a dielectric-covered cable 15 leaving the shaver is kept constant. The capacitance is sensed by use of a trough 16 filled with water through which the cable passes, the capacitance between trough and centre core of the cable acting through servomechanism 52 and motor 45 to adjust the axial position of a collar 34 (which is screw threaded on to a stationary part 32) relative to the shank 20 of the shaver head 11. The blades 12 of the shaver are pivoted at 30 on to the rotating shank 20 carrying a pinion 21 which is driven by motor 24, and have slots 31 receiving pins 39 on a blade-adjusting member 36 which is rotatable inside collar 34, and hence axial movement of collar 34 and member 36 acts to vary the depth of cut of blades 12.
