873,773. Electric selective indicators. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. June 12, 1959 [June 12, 1958], No. 18890/58. Addition to 833,046. Class 40 (1). Electric apparatus for displaying numbers and/or other symbols comprises a rotating member bearing a range of symbols, a required combination of which are made to appear at a viewing window by timing the operation of a stroboscopic lamp in synchronism with the rotating member. A drum 1 bearing a plurality of tracks 6-10 of transparent numbers or symbols and a track 3 of magnetic signals 22, each associated with only one number of sections 16-20, may be rotated by means of a motor 4. An electronic sensing head 21 receives the signals 22 and sends a pulse, via an amplifier 23, to a lamp 12 which is situated within the drum. The lamp flashes each time the numeral to be displayed passes a window 15 in the apparatus. To allow a reasonable time lapse between each flash of the lamp (which would not be the case were " 0 " of track 6 followed by " 1 " of track 9 for example) it is arranged that the order of reading of the sections is 16, 18, 20, 17, 19 (in two revolutions). A cog 24 having fifty teeth, i.e. one for each digit in decades 16-20, operates a device 25 to inhibit the amplifier 23 every ten teeth, starting at a tooth corresponding to zero. A number of lamps and windows may be arranged independent of each other.
