Abstract

873,483. Photographic cameras. BERLIER, J. M. Oct. 14, 1957 [Oct. 12, 1956; Sept. 18, 1957], No. 31952/57. Class 98(1) A photographic film camera which is synchronised for use with flash, is adapted to receive a film cassette, and has a take-up film spool with mechanism for transporting the film before each exposure on to such spool and subsequently for rewinding the film into the cassette is characterised in that a flash unit comprising a bulb holder and collapsible reflector is so mounted on the camera and is so constructed as to be capable of being disposed within said hollow film spool when not in use complete with flash bulb, or of being raised therefrom into a camera-mounted operative position for use with its reflector opened, and in that further means are included in the camera electrically to connect the bulb holder to the synchronising mechanism of the camera, when in such operative position. As shown (Fig. 3) the camera comprises lens 51, view finder 52, film sensitivity and diaphragm setting means 56, 65, shutter speed setting means 71 and a collapsible flash bulb and reflector unit 16, 17, which unit is supported by a holder 23, 24 (Fig. 14) slidable in a fixed cage 15 forming a bearing for the hollow take-up spool 14, and may be stowed in said spool when not in use. When the flash unit is stowed as said, a cap 25 covers the aperture in the top of the camera housing and the flash bulb is rendered inoperable by means of a break in the electrical connection between contacts 29 on the unit and spring contacts 28 on the camera. The diaphragm, which comprises a disc 63 (Figs. 7 and 8) having various apertures 64 formed therein, is connected by way of pinion 62, toothed sector 58<SP>1</SP>, and shaft 57 to a disc 56 which is itself releasably connected by means of projection 68 to a dished setting disc 65 having several apertures 67 formed therein and being constantly urged upwards by spring 70. For setting of the diaphragm, first disc 65 is rotated relative to disc 56. to bring index 66 into register with the relevant value of a film sensitivity scale on disc 56 and then the two discs are rotated together to bring index 66 into register with the relevant lighting indication A-F on the sector 71. A weak ratchet device 77-79 holds the diaphragm in the set position. Sector 71 is displaceable into either of two positions against the action of a strong ratchet device 72, 73, and is connected by way of arm 81 (Fig. 11) to the shutter (not shown) for adjustment thereof to either of the two available speeds, for example 1/50th sec. (as set in Fig. 3) or 1/200th sec. When taking flashlight photographs, the only setting necessary is the adjustment of index 66, in the manner described above, to the relevant flash bulb-distance indication A-F on sector 71. On lifting the flash unit out of the camera the electrical connection 28, 29 is made, and by means of double armed lever 83, 85, engageable by housing 23 and pivotable thereby into the oblique position shown in Fig. 11, the shutter setting arm 81 is moved into the slower shutter speed setting position (for example, 1/50th sec.). The take-up spool 15 has guide flanges 35, and is connected to a winding knob 54 which has 3 blind holes 39 therein engageable in turn by pin 44 on blade spring 41 for limiting the advance of the film.
