Abstract

873,361. Projectile fuzes. DIEHL G.m.b.H. Oct. 20, 1958, No. 33490/58. Class 9(1). In a missile fuze a radioactive substance is used to keep safe, to arm, or to fire the explosive charge. Fig. 7 shows one arrangement and Fig. 4 the corresponding circuit. In the safe condition a radioactive S + pellet 36, 47 irradiates a semi-conductor 35, 49 and makes it conducting, forming a short circuit across a primer. To arm the missile the pellet is moved up to a semi-conductor 34, 56 (e.g. Si) in which it produces a charge which is stored in condensers. For firing, the pellet is moved to ionize a spark gap to allow the condensers to discharge through the primer. Other means of firing and keeping safe are possible-e.g. switches, breakable barriers. If the missile misses its target the continuing increase of charge on the condensers can be used to cause self-destruction.
