Class 40(3) [Also in Group XXX] Apparatus for sorting letters or translating one language or code into another comprises an input device which supplies signals to a translator consisting of a number of parallel perforated sheets arranged between a light source and a detector, each sheet being movable by the input device to two or more positions so as to align different holes and produce a corresponding output from the detector. The perforated sheets may be slidable or rotatable by solenoids or pneumatic motors. The light source may comprise a number of strip lights and the detector a number of photo-cells corresponding to the number of perforation positions or a submultiple thereof; or, a single light source or photo-cell may be used with a cathode ray tube as the detector or source. Further coding or control may be superimposed on the main system by movable mirrors or by using a variable light source, Fig. 20 (not shown). Flexible light pipes may be employed between the translator and the detector and may be differently connected so as to alter the translation produced. Two light pipes may be joined or the pipes may sub-divide. In a letter-sorting apparatus, Fig. 22, code markings on a letter 302 are read by an input device 301 and the signals applied to a translator 306 to set the perforated sheets 305. Light from a source 307 passes through the translator 306 and light pipes 314A-F to a signal generator 313 which controls doors 323 in a shoot 317 so that the letter is directed to the correct compartment 318 of a receiver 319.
