A book rest for supporting a book for reading purposes in inclined position on a horizontal surface, and adapted to be collapsed into a flat condition and folded between the book covers, is made of foldably and permanently connected panels including a folding rib structure which acts as a rigid compression structure. As shown in Fig. 1, there are two rests or supports A and B, the one being a "mirror image" of the other, and each can be folded flat beneath the respective book cover, as shown in Fig. 2. Each support A, B is attached to the inside of the respective book cover 80 or 82 and the fly-leaf by panels 22 (not shown) and 23, and in the case of the loose leaf book shown in Fig. 6, the panels are provided with perforations which are engaged by the filing rings or posts. Each support is made from two sheets of stiff two-ply paper or of thin sheet metal which are glued or secured together along particular fold lines. Some of the fold lines in the support may be reinforced by strips of linen or flexible plastic material, and the fold lines between panels such as 58, 63, 64, which form the compression members of the folding rib structure, may be reinforced by thin wire. Two panels 39, 40 are, interlocked and serve to lock the compression members of the folding rib structure when the support. is in use, and as a gripping means whereby the entire support can be pulled from the folded position, shown in Fig. 2, to the erected position, shown in Fig. 1. Two further book rests or supports are described wherein the number and shape of the panels are modified, and wherein tabs are provided to facilitate erection thereof, and rubber bands serve to fix the erectedposition of certain panels.
