872,965. Manufacture of glass lens assemblies. CORNING GLASS WORKS. Jan. 22, 1960 [Jan. 26, 1959], No. 2445/60. Class 56. In the manufacture of a fused glass lens segment assembly for use in the manufacture of bifocal lenses, a preformed glass carrier 10 containing a segment cavity 12, heated on a refractory block 20 to a temperature between its annealing and softening points, is moved beneath a sheared stream 16 of molten glass of different refractive index and of less cross-sectional area than the cavity, so that the shear mark 22 impinges on the bottom plane of the cavity 12 ; the stream 16 is sheared, as by means 18, after sufficient glass to fill the cavity has descended whereby the shear mark 24 is deposited above the level of the finished lens surface, shown in dotted line in Fig. 6, and the surface of the glass in the cavity is pressed while still at a temperature above its softening point to fuse it uniformly to the walls of the carrier and the fused assembly then annealed. The lower surface is then ground to the desired curvature 26, during which the carrier web 28 and shear. mark 22 are removed, and placed in a concave depression in the major element 30 of the same glass as the carrier 10 and fused thereto. The final grinding removes the shear mark 24. In a modification, the cavity 12 extends right through the carrier 10.
