Abstract
In the separation of naphthalene from crude naphthalene oil the oil is crystallised at a temperature above 18 DEG C. and the resultant crystals are separated in a first centrifuge, the discharged liquor is further cooled to below 18 DEG C. and the resultant crystals separated in a second centrifuge and the latter crystals are melted and returned to the inlet to the first crystalliser. Preferably in the second crystallisation the oil is cooled to about 5 DEG C. The crystals obtained in the first centrifuge may be purified by washing with a solvent or hot water which may contain caustic soda, a soap or a surface active agent or by steam treatment.ALSO:Naphthalene is obtained from naphthalene oil by crystallizing at above 18 DEG C. and separating the crystals in a first centrifuge, cooling the mother liquors to below 18 DEG C. and separating the crystals formed in a second centrifuge, and melting these crystals, and returning them to the first crystalliser. In the second crystallisation the liquors are cooled to about 5 DEG C.
