Abstract
Malonic acid alkali or alkaline-earth metal salts are prepared by reacting carbon dioxide with an a -metallo metallic acetate wherein the metallic atoms are those of alkali or alkaline earth metals at a temperature above about 140 DEG C. upwards but below the decomposition temperature of the metallo acetate reactant. The reaction may be effected under raised pressure and the metallo acetate reagent may be used in suspension on a substantially inert organic diluent, various hydrocarbons and acyclic and cyclic ethers being mentioned. The resulting malonic salt may be acidified suitably in aqueous solution and the liberated malonic acid recovered by solvent extraction. Alternatively, the metal malonate may be reacted with an esterifying agent such as an alkyl sulphate or alkyl halide; many such compounds being specified as suitable. The a metallo metallic acetates are prepared by the method described in Specification 872,756. Examples: (1) a -sodio sodium acetate is slowly added to a reactor heated to 213 DEG C. through which CO2 is passed and the resulting di sodium malonate is acidified to liberate the free acid; dilithium malonate is prepared similarly (2) a -calcio sodium acetate is reacted as in (1) at 200 DEG C., yielding sodium calcium malonate.
