Abstract
872,586. Surgical operating lights. RITTER CO. Inc. Oct. 19, 1959, No. 35341/59 Class 75(4). A light for surgical use comprises a reflector having a light source mounted therein and itself mounted for varying the area to be illuminated, the light source being adjustable towards and away from-the reflector by a removable device mounted below it. In the form shown. the reflector 43, Fig. 2, is carried by a hollow support arm 29 having a cylindrical extension 25 mounted to pivot in the end of a pivoted yoke 13. The yoke may be carried on an arm 18, Fig. 1, itself pivoted at 19 to a telescopic support arm 17 mounted for vertical rotation on a carriage movable on rails. A handle 21 is provided for turning the arm 18 and has a knob, rotation of which moves the extension 25 by means of a cable. The lamp 54 is carried by a socket 34 and enclosed in two cylindrical lenses 56, 57 the inner one 56 of which may be made up of sections to allow for heat expansion. The electric supply to the lamp is carried through the hollow supporting elements 17, 18, 13 and 29. Secured to a disc 83 on the underside of the lamp support is a removable sterilizible handle 87 secured in place by a hairpin clip. For moving the lamp towards and away from the reflector, a shell 52 surrounding the base of a lamp is secured to the reflector and has a depending sleeve 106 having a pair of angularly arranged slots on opposite sides which are engaged by pins 107. 108 in a sleeve depending from a light shield 110. Rotation of the handle 87 moves the lamp assembly relative to the shell 52 and the reflector. A shaft 116 having an operating knob 123 is coupled to the pin 107 so that the adjustment may also be made by this means. The base of the reflector is closed by a cap 61 having ventilation openings 63, surrounded by a sleeve 62 packed with steel wool to filter out dust.
