872,529. Hydraulic torque converters. BORGWARNER CORPORATION. Dec. 10, 1957 [Dec. 27, 1956], No. 38377/57. Class 69 (2). A torque converter for an automobile has a primary impeller 16 driven by the input and a secondary impeller 17 adapted to be driven by the primary impeller through a clutch 18 mounted within the liquid circuit torus. The clutch is actuated hydraulically by the accelerator pedal, or automatically by a governor responsive to vehicle speed with overriding accelerator pedal control, when extra acceleration is required. In another embodiment, Fig. 7 (not shown), a further secondary impeller is provided and adapted to be driven by the primary impeller through a clutch mounted outside the torus.
