Abstract

Modified N-methylol polyethers containing methylol groups are prepared by condensing, initially at an alkaline pH, a poly N-methylol compound with a polyether containing free N-methylol groups and one or more chains which comprise at least two nitrogen atoms, to at least one of which is linked, by means of a -CH2O-grouping, a radical containing at least one ether or thioether atom joined to a carbon chain of more than two carbon atoms. Suitable poly-N-methylol compounds are hexamethylol melamine, tetramethylol acetylene urea, tetramethylol dimethyl acetylene urea, tetramethylol hydrazocarbonamide, polymethylol compounds of adipic acid diamide or dihydrazide, and polymethylol compounds of diurethanes. The N-methylol polyethers containing methylol groups are those claimed in Specification 872,523. Examples are polyethers prepared from ditri- or tetramethylol urea or thiourea, polymethylol diureas, poly-N-methylol compounds of dicarboxylic acid diamides, tetramethylene-tetramethylol diurethane, tetramethylol hydrazodicarbonamide, tetramethylolacetylene urea, or from tetramethylol dimethyl acetylene urea. Reaction is preferably preformed in solvents, e.g. water and/or polyhydric alcohols, e.g. hexane triol. Inorganic or organic basic catalysts may be used. A suitable reaction temperature is about 90 DEG C. In Examples (1) aqueous hexamethylol melamine is heated in alkalene medium, containing also hexane triol, with a polyether from trimethylol urea, hexane triol and butane dihydroxyethyl glycol. The product is a clear solution infinitely diluable with water; (2) The polyether used was obtained from trimethylol urea and the reaction product of 1 mol of trimethylol propane with 3 mols of ethylene oxide; (3) The polyether of Example (1) is reacted, in each case in alkaline hexanetriol with: (a) hexamethylol adipic acid dihydrazide; (b) tetramethylol-tetramethylene diurethane; (c) dimethylol dicyandiamide; (d) tetramethylol hexamethylene diurea; (e) tetramethylol adipic acid diamide; (f) tetramethylol acetylene urea; (g) tetramethylol dimethyl acetylene urea. In each case stable solutions miscible with water in all proportions is obtained. Uses: As auxiliaries for fixing pigments on textiles.
