Abstract

The properties of shaped structures, e.g. films, fibres, fabrics &c., made from linear condensation polyamides are modified by incorporating therein acidic polymerizable compounds which are then polymerized by heating the structures under such conditions that the average chain length of the polyamide is substantially unchanged. Of the polyamides specified preferred are polyhexamethyleneadipamide and polycaproamide. Acidic compounds specified are acrylic, methacrylic, crotonic furoic, propiolic, itaconic, fumaric, maleic, chloromaleic, styrene sulphonic and ethylene sulphonic acids and derivatives thereof, e.g. esters, amides, nitriles, amides and anhydrides, which are convertible to acid form. The polymerization of the acidic compound may be assisted by an initiator, e.g. an organic or inorganic peroxy compound, an azine or an azo compound. In the resulting products, in which the polymeric acid compound is present in grafted form, the acid groups may be converted to salt form by treatment with the salts of mono- or di-valent metals or organic bases. Specifications 461,236 and 872,513 are referred to.ALSO:The elasticity, deformability, dyeability, heatresistance, crease-resistance and antistatic properties of fibres and fabrics made from linear condensation polyamides are improved by incorporating in the fibre or fabric an acidic polymerizable compound containing aliphatic unsaturation and polymerizing it by heating the polyamide structure containing it under conditions such that the average chain length of the polyamide is unchanged. Of the polyamides specified those preferred are polyhexamethylene adipamide and polycaproamide. Acidic compounds specified are acrylic, methacrylic, crotonic, furoic, propiolic, itaconic, fumaric, maleic, chloromaleic, styrene sulphonic and ethylene sulphonic acids and derivatives thereof which are convertible to acid form. Specifications 461,236 and 872,513 are referred to.ALSO:Linear polyamides which may be in the form of a shaped structure, e.g. in the form of a fibre, flake or film, are modified by incorporating therein an acidic polymerizable compound containing aliphatic unsaturation and polymerizing it by heating the polyamide containing it under conditions such that the average chain length of the polyamide is unchanged. Of the polyamides specified preferred are polyhexamethylene adipamide and polycaproamide. Acidic compounds specified acrylic, methacrylic, crotonic, furoic, propidic, itaconic, fumaric, maleic, chloromaleic, styrene sulphonic and ethylene sulphonic acids and derivatives thereof which are convertible to acid form. The acidic substance may be added to the polyamide by padding, dipping or spraying of a dispersion, emulsion or solution of the substance, or the pure substance itself in liquid form. Specifications 461,236 and 872,513 are referred to.
