Abstract

<PICT:0872115/IV (a)/1> <PICT:0872115/IV (a)/2> <PICT:0872115/IV (a)/3> An apparatus for producing flattened tubular film of organic thermoplastic material comprises an extruder 1 (Fig. 1), an extrusion nozzle 2 arranged to effect the continuous downward extrusion of a tube of the molten material, and a tube 3 for the inflation of the tube with air so as to maintain therein a volume of air such that the degree of inflation of the tube, in combination with the rate of withdrawal of the tube, reduces the thickness of the tube to a predetermined value and converts it into a tubular film 4 of predetermined diameter and gauge. The tube is continuously withdrawn downwardly by a pair of pinch rolls 5, 6 which also flatten the tube, which is wound on to a reel 7. En route to the rolls, the tube is cooled and set by directing on to the unenclosed tube in the vicinity of its initial inflation a continuous curtain 8 of a cooling liquid such as water. The curtain impinges on the tube and runs down over it towards the rolls 5, 6 to be collected in a container 9 beneath the rolls. The cooling device may comprise a hollow annular member provided around its inner face 10 (Figs. 1 and 2) with a slit-like jet orifice 11 communicating with a chamber 12 to which the cooling liquid is delivered under pressure. The orifice 11 may be directed downwards towards the direction of movement of the tube, as shown in Fig. 3. The annular member may be located at a level somewhat above that of the face of the extrusion die so that the annular area of impingement of the curtain of cooling liquid is located close to the point of extrusion. The inflated tube may be pre-cooled by a stream of air from an annular jet surrounding the tube before the tube passes through the curtain of cooling liquid. The apparatus enables the distance between the die and the nip rolls to be reduced and facilitates the production of films, particularly of polyethylene, of superior gloss and clarity.
