872,037. Stress measuring; strain gauges. ELEKTRO-THERMIT G.m.b.H. Oct. 30, 1959 [Nov. 22, 1958], No. 36973/59. Class 106 (2). [Also in Group XX] The stress in continuously welded railway tracks is determined by providing two fixed points 2, 3, a distance l apart, on the web of the rail 1, such as by providing projections 4, 5, fixed to the rail, arranging a measuring rod 6 of the same material as rail 1 but slightly shorter in length than l, adjacent to the rail 1 with one end abutting point 3, and then measuring the distance between the other end of rod 6 and point 2 at different temperatures. Since the rod 6 is free to expand and contract with temperature but the rail 1 is not, the stresses in the rail 1 can be evaluated. Measurement may be made by means of a feeler gauge 7.
