Abstract
A spinneret has orifices having their vertical section in the form of a downwardly tapering frustocone, the narrow end of which continues as a cylindrical capillary coaxial therewith, the conical angle not exceeding 14 degrees and preferably not exceeding 7 degrees, the length of the frustocone being from 0,75 to 2,5 cms. and the length of the cylindrical portion being from 5%-40%, preferably from 20%-40%, of the total length of the conical and cylindrical portions. The edges of the orifices may be slightly rounded. Such spinnerets are suitable for the melt-spinning of highly viscous melts of filament-forming polymers, especially polyolefins, e.g. polyethylene, polypropylene, poly-4-methylpentene-1 and polystyrene, and may also be used in the melt-spinning of polyamides. Specifications 538,986, 731,849 and 810,023 are referred to.
