Abstract
871,833. Knitted fabrics. ALAMANCE INDUSTRIES Inc. March 5,1958 [Aug. 19, 1957], No. 7118/58. Class 74 (2). [Also in Group VI] Each of a plurality of courses of a tubular garment, such as a surgical stocking, is formed from at least three independent high-torque lively monofilament yarns (e.g. nylon yarns), the torque directions of all the yarns forming any one course being the same, but the torque direction of the yarns in some courses being opposite to that of the yarns in other courses. Thus, pairs of courses knitted from four S-twist yarns S-1 to S-4 may alternate with pairs of courses knitted from four Z-twist yarns Z-1 to Z-4. A fully fashioned blank may have a leg 12 and foot knitted by the two-carrier method, pairs of S-twist and Z-twist courses alternating. The plain narrowings 13, 14 may exceed the normal number, to provide a relatively narrow leg; and the number of calf narrowings 15, 16 may be such as to cause a relatively sharp reduction in fabric width. The turned welt 10 and afterwelt 11 are knitted with a single yarn carrier feeding a non-torque nylon yarn. The heel pockets 17, 18 are formed by widening and narrowing and the toe is formed by a conventional narrowing operation, to form a tail 21. Heel pockets, foot and toe may be reinforced by feeding non-torque yarn from the splicing carriers. To control the liveliness during knitting, the yarn cones are dipped into an oil bath before placing them on the machine, to deaden " static " and to make possible a greater yarn tension; and the yarn may pass over an oil supply wick on its way to the yarn carrier.
