Abstract

An exchange of hydrocarbon groups between aluminium hydrocarbon compounds and boron hydrocarbon compounds is effected by reacting together two such compounds in which the hydrocarbon radicals are different. Thus a boron hydrocarbon the hydrocarbon radicals of which are of higher molecular weight than those of the boron hydrocarbon to be produced may be reacted with an aluminium hydrocarbon, the radicals of which are the same as those in the desired boron hydrocarbon, and the reaction mixture distilled to recover the boron hydrocarbon which is the most volatile component of the mixture. Boron hydrocarbons the radicals of which are of lower molecular weight than those of the desired boron hydrocarbon may be reacted in the cold with an excess of an aluminium hydrocarbon, the radicals of which are the same as those in the desired boron hydrocarbon and the mixture hydrolysed to decompose the aluminium compound and recover the desired boron hydrocarbon, for example with water or dilute sulphuric acid in the cold. Straight chain olefines may be reacted with diborane to form a boron trialkyl which is then reacted with an aluminium hydrocarbon to form the corresponding aluminium trialkyl. Lower boron alkyls formed as secondary products may be reconverted to diborane by hydrogenation. An aluminium triphenyl is obtained by reacting boron triphenyl, or the reaction product of sodium borotetraphenyl with diethyl aluminium chloride, with aluminium triethyl, distilling off boron triethyl and extracting the aluminium triphenyl, e.g. with hot xylene, in the absence of air. Boron alkyls may be built up by reaction with ethylene to form higher boron alkyls in the presence of catayltic quantities of aluminium alkyls as described in Specification 858,446, and the boron alkyls so formed may be then reacted with the aluminium hydrocarbons to form the corresponding higher aluminium trialkyls.
