Abstract

871,445. Riveting. HUCK MANUFACTURING CO. July 2, 1959 [July 31, 1958], No. 22736/59. Class 83 (4). [Also in Group XXV] A driving tool for setting a fastener comprising a pin 12 having a head 26 at one end and a collar 14 for swaging into locking grooves 30 on the pin spaced from said head while the pin is being gripped and pulled at a screwthreaded stem portion 40 located opposite the head, comprises a nut member 46 having internal screw threads for engaging the stem portion of the pin so as to be moved axially of the pin upon rotation of the nut member and a tubular swaging anvil 42 rotatably mounted with respect to said nut member for swaging engagement with the collar. The pin is formed with a hexagonal wrenching portion 36 at its end opposite the head 26. A thrust bearing 50 is disposed between the nut member and the anvil and the tool members are held in assembly by a retaining sleeve 52. In operation, the pin is inserted through the openings in the members 20, 22 to be joined and the collar 14 placed over the locking grooves of the pin. The tool is then applied to the pin by threading the nut member on to the pin portion 40 until the anvil engages the collar 14. The nut member is rotated by a wrench and the pin is prevented from rotating by applying another wrench to the hexagonal end portion 36 of the pin. Rotation of the nut member is continued until the collar is swaged on to the locking grooves of the pin and the pin fractures at a breakneck portion 34. The anvil is removed from the swaged collar by rotating the wrenching portion 36 of the pin tail which acts as a jack to retract the anvil. Specification 629,098 is referred to.
