Abstract

Plastics compositions comprise as fluorescent agents thiophene-dioxide compounds of formula: <FORM:0871351/IV (a)/1> wherein Ar is an aromatic radical and wherein two adjacent carbon atoms of the fused benzene ring may form part of a further benzene ring. The compounds may be substituted. In an example, 2-(41-chlorophenyl)-benzothiophene-1, 1-dioxide is dissolved in a formamide solution of polyacrylonitrile, and the solution spun into fibres.ALSO:The invention comprises thiophene-dioxide compounds of formula: <FORM:0871351/IV (b)/1> wherein Ar is an aromatic radical and wherein two adjacent carbon atoms of the fused benzene ring may form part of a further benzene ring. R may be phenyl or naphthyl. The compounds may be substituted, e.g. by halogen, alkyl, hydroxy, alkoxy, substituted and unsubstituted amino groups and salts thereof, acylamino and sulphonic and carboxylic radicals and salts and esters thereof.
