Abstract

Plastics compositions comprise as fluorescent agents thiophene-dioxide compounds of formula: <FORM:0871351/IV (a)/1> wherein Ar is an aromatic radical and wherein two adjacent carbon atoms of the fused benzene ring may form part of a further benzene ring. The compounds may be substituted. In an example, 2-(41-chlorophenyl)-benzothiophene-1, 1-dioxide is dissolved in a formamide solution of polyacrylonitrile, and the solution spun into fibres.ALSO:The invention comprises thiophene-dioxide compounds of formula: <FORM:0871351/IV (b)/1> wherein Ar is an aromatic radical and wherein two adjacent carbon atoms of the fused benzene ring may form part of a further benzene ring. R may be phenyl or naphthyl. The compounds may be substituted, e.g. by halogen, alkyl, hydroxy, alkoxy, substituted and unsubstituted amino groups and salts thereof, acylamino and sulphonic and carboxylic radicals and salts and esters thereof. They may be prepared by oxidising a 2-aryl-benzothiophene with hydrogen peroxide or a per-acid, or substituents may be introduced after the oxidation step. The products find use as fluorescent dyes and optical brightening agents, e.g. in treating natural and synthetic textiles, plastics, resins, lacquers, soaps, leather and paper.ALSO:Textiles are treated with fluorescent thiophenedioxide compounds of formula:- <FORM:0871351/IV(c)/1> wherein Ar is an aromatic radical (e.g. phenyl or naphthyl) and wherein two adjacent carbon atoms of the fused benzene ring may form part of a further benzene ring. The compounds may be substituted, e.g. by halogen, alkyl, hydroxy, alkoxy, substituted or unsubstituted amino, acylamino, and sulphonic or carboxylic radicals or esters or salts thereof. The compounds are generally used in aqueous solution or dispersion or with washing agents. Examples describe the treatment of polyethylene terephthalate yarn and cellulose acetate cloth. Other textiles mentioned are wool, cotton, linen, rayon, polyesters, polyamides and polyacrylonitriles. It is stated that certain compounds of the above formula have dyeing properties.ALSO:Soap compositions contain as fluorescent agents thiophene-dioxide compounds of formula <FORM:0871351/III/1> wherein Ar is an aromatic radical and wherein two adjacent carbon atoms of the fused benzene ring may form part of a further benzene ring. The compounds may be substituted. In an example, a toilet soap stock containing perfume, antioxidant and pigment is p brightened with the sodium salt of sulphonated 2-phenylbenzolthiophene-1,1-dioxide.
