Abstract

A gasoline composition contains at least 1 gram of lead as an organolead compound per U.S. gallon of gasoline and a non-ionic manganese polycarbonyl compound having the empirical formula RxMn(CO)v where R is an organic radical, x is from 0 to 7 and y is from 2 to 5, in an amount such that the manganese concentration is from 0.5 to 15% of the lead concentration. The manganese compound may be manganese carbonyl, methyl manganese pentacarbonyl, benzoyl manganese pentacarbonyl, phenyl manganese pentacarbonyl or acetyl manganese pentacarbonyl, and may be present in an amount of 0.01 to 6 grams of manganese per U.S. gallon. The lead compound may be tetraethyl lead, tetramethyl lead, tetrapropyl lead, tetraphenyl lead or tetratolyl lead, and may be present in an amount of 0.1 to 8 grams of lead per U.S. gallon. Halogenated hydrocarbons such as ethylene dibromide and ethylene dichloride may also be present. Examples are given.
