Abstract

871,229. Inductances. ALADDIN INDUSTRIES Inc. Sept. 11, 1959 [Sept. 11, 1958], No. 31110/59. Class 38 (2). [Also in Group XL (c)] A tuner comprising a coil 14, having a plurality of taps and mounted on an insulating cylinder, is characterized in that it includes a conductive strip extending at least part way round the cylinder and connected to one end of the coil, a first stationary contact 26 engaging the conductive strip and a second one 28 engageable with each of the taps in succession so that the effective inductance of the coil between the contacts is varied by rotating the cylinder. The conductive strip 46 is divided into two segments 46a, 46b corresponding to two coil portions 44a, 44b which cover channels 2-6 and 7-13 respectively, one end of the coil portion 44a being connected to the segment 46a and one end of coil 44b connected to segment 46b. The details of the coil 14 are as shown in Fig. 2, the coil being arranged to minimize the need for cross-overs or jumpers. To provide suitable inductances for two channels 7-13, arrow-shaped ribbon conductors 50-7 up to 50-13 extending between the corresponding taps and the conductive strip 46b are used. To cover the low portion of the V.H.F. television band the coil 44a has more inductance and in this case the coils wound round the cylinders include spiral coil portions extending round the taps 48-2, 48-3, 48-4. When the contact 28 engages the tap 48-IF all of the turns 50-IF, 50-2 up to 50-6 are in the circuit between 26 and 28, and as the cylinder is rotated the coil elements are removed from the circuit as the contact 28 moves on to the taps 48-2 to 48-6. Further rotation of the cylinder will bring the tap 48-7 against the contact 28, the contact 26 then being engaged by the conductive strip 46a. All of the inductance elements 50-7 up to 50-13 will then be in the circuit between the contacts 26 and 28. By further rotation of the drum successive inductance elements are cut out as above. A number of tuners may be operated simultaneously by ganging the tuner shafts together with gears or other suitable mechanisms.
