Abstract

N-trialkyl borazanes are produced by reacting trialkylamine compounds of boron halides (i.e. N-trialkyl B-trihalogenoborazanes), including compounds of trialkylamines which contain cycloalkyl radicals attached to the nitrogen, at room temperature or elevated temperature with alkali metal or alkaline earth metal hydrides, borohydrides or complexes of the metal hydrides with boric acid esters. A solvent may be used, such as a hydrocarbon or ether or the N-trialkyl borazane which is being produced. A ball mill is a suitable reaction vessel. A trialkylamine-boron trichloride compound may be used with a wide range of hydrides. The trialkylamine-boron trifluoride compounds react readily with lithium hydride or alkaline earth metal hydrides but with sodium or potassium hydrides or borohydrides a sodium or potassium borofluoride is formed in addition to the borazane and trialkylamine, which borofluoride is decomposed, by heating, into boron fluoride and sodium fluoride and the resulting boron fluoride is reacted with the trialkylamine to form the trialkylamine-boron fluoride compound which can be used again. A trialkylamine-boron fluoride compound reacts with a borohydride of an alkali metal or alkaline earth metal in the presence of an excess of trialkylamine to give a borazane and a metal fluoride and some of the borazone is reacted with an alkali or alkaline earth metal hydride to form the borohydride and trialkylamine which can be used again. In one method of operation, the trialkylamine-boron fluoride compound is mixed with a trialkyl borazane as a solvent and calcium hydride is added in finely powdered form, preferably in suspension in an inert solvent.
