Abstract
871,038. Jet propelled aircraft. WESTING- HOUSE ELECTRIC CORPORATION. Oct. 7, 1959, No. 33956/59. Class 4. [Also in Group XXVI] An aviation jet propulsion engine comprises an inner tubular casing 13 provided with an exhaust nozzle 11, of variable area, an outer shell structure 21 concentrically encompassing the inner casing 13 and an ejector shell structure 24 including shell segments 25 being disposed concentrically within the outer casing and having means for rotation of the segments about an axis normal to the central axis of the exhaust nozzle. First actuator means move the shell segments 25 parallel to the nozzle axis to provide a continuation of the outer shell structure with means provided for preventing rotation of the shell segments 25 during the axial movement of the shell structure and second actuator means 33 rotate the shell segments about pivots 27 into the exhaust gas path to reverse the direction of thrust, the second actuator means 33 being effective when the means for preventing rotation of the shell segments is ineffective. Under normal running conditions the shell segments 25 are withdrawn into the outer casing 23, Fig. 1, and the exhaust nozzle area reduced by leaves 36 operated by an actuator 39. During afterburning the shell structure 24 is extended rearwardly until the lipped edge 42 is only slightly forward of an annular seal 35. At the same time pressurized air is fed to the annular passageway 22 and ejected into the ambient air as an envelope surrounding the enlarged exhaust nozzle aperture, Fig. 2. For reverse thrust, the exhaust nozzle is reduced in area and the ejector shell extended rearwardly until clear of the outer casing 23, whereupon actuator arms 26 are arrested and links 31 driven by arms 32 of actuators 33 pivot the shell segments 25 about hinge pins 27 until the segments abut end to end. The lipped edge 42 gives the exhaust gas a forward component of velocity.
