In a method of manufacturing zig-zag filter elements from a continuous strip 2 of material such as filter paper the filter paper strip 2 is initially cut to the desired width and then selectively folded back and forth on itself, each layer being glued to its neighbour along spaced tack lines 8, the lines in alternate folds being shifted transversely to the mid-point of its neighbouring patterns, the bais 8 being drawn perpendicular to the folds of the filter stock. The end sheets of the filter stock are glued to rigid panels 9 and pulled apart to expand the stock, whereupon two more panels 10 are inserted between the end panels 9 to hold them apart. Such a filter now consists of a series of elongated oval section pockets alternate rows of pockets 11 and 12 being closed at opposite ends. After joining the four panels 9 and 10 to make a rigid frame, the sides 10 are masked and then in turn are dipped into a sealing compound to provide a seal 13 between the filter and the sides 10. The filter paper strip 2 may be precut into a continuous diamond pattern to produce a filter stock with pockets of varying width, arranged diagonally with respect to its framework, or the rectangular stock expanded cylindrically in either of two perpendicular directions to form cylindrical filters, the two ends being glued together, said cylindrical filters being provided with an outer rigid cylinder and an inner plug or endcap according to whether the pockets extend in an axial or radial direction. Sagging of long filter elements may be avoided by preforming or precutting.
