Abstract

870,971. Valves. BENDIX-WESTING- HOUSE AUTOMOTIVE AIR BRAKE CO. Nov. 11, 1959 [May 11, 1959], No. 38302/59. Class 135. [Also in Groups XXXII and XXXIV] A fluid pressure control valve, for a braking system, comprises a housing 10 in which a selflapping valve 24 is acted upon by a pressureresponsive member 44 to control the pressure differential between inlet and outlet chambers 16, 18. The member 44 is provided with a plunger portion 46 and a recess 54 which receives a rubber annulus 60, the annulus being initially axially compressed through a bolt 64 and a plate 62 movable in a larger recess 58 of the member. A brake pedal 66 is pivoted at 70 and carries a roller 72 which acts on a plunger 74. In operation, depression of the pedal 66 acts through the plunger 74, plate 62 and rubber annulus 60 to move the pressure-responsive member 44 whereby the end 48 of the plunger portion 46 first seats on the valve 24 and then opens this valve so that fluid passes from the inlet chamber to the outlet chamber. As the pressure in the outlet chamber increases, it acts on the member 44 to compress the rubber annulus 60 and allow the valve 24 to close. Further depression of the pedal increases the pressure in the outlet chamber until the plate 62 seats on the bottom of recess 58 after which, further depression of the lever 66 holds the valve 24 open. When the pedal is released the valve 24 closes and the fluid in the outlet chamber escapes past the end 48 of the plunger and through a bore 28 to the outside. The rubber annulus 60 is so constructed (see Group XXXII) that when it is compressed axially it will not bulge radially outward into the space between the plate 62 and recess 58. The valve described provides for small travel of the pedal, as compared with existing valves, over the range of pressures normally employed in braking and once the plate 62 is seated in the recess 58 and the valve 24 is open, only increased manual pressure on the pedal 66 is required to hold the valve open without further movement of this pedal.
