Abstract
During the manufacture of polyethylene polymerization occurs at low pressure at a temperature of 250 DEG -350 DEG F. in a cyclohexane carrier liquid in the presence of a solid catalyst. The resultant mixture is passed through a centrifugal separator system (see Group II), the polyethylene and catalyst particles being respectively contained in the overflow and underflow from the separator. To prevent polyethylene depositing the temperature within the separator is above 230 DEG F., and to prevent the cyclohexane and polyethylene boiling within the system the pressure is maintained at 100 p.s.i.g. To minimize migration in the separator of catalyst particles from the underflow to the overflow, the underflow is maintained at a temperature of 5 DEG F. below that of the overflow by cooling and returning part of the underflow to the separator.
