A substance pusher 4 in a carrier 3 of a gravity feed slicing machine has its surface area extended by a detachable plate 13, e.g. of sectoral shape, for engaging wider food blocks, the plate 13, as shown, being mounted on a heavy rear support 14 having an open slotted bracket 17 whereby it can be detachably secured to a stud 11 on the main pusher support 9 by a screw knob 12. The support 14 carries fibre stops 18 which rest on the arm 5 and support 9 of the pusher 4. The plate 13 is removed before the main pusher is moved to stowage position beneath the carrier.
