Tubing, suspended in a well casing 16, is supported by taper slips 51 arranged in a ring between the tubing 18 and a hanger body 40 having a conical bearing surface 50 for the slips, the angle between the faces of the slips being less than the angle between the tubing 18 and the surface 50 so that the lower parts only of the slips engage the surface 50, if the load on the slips is small, and as the bearing surface 50 is increasely distorted as the loading increases, the slips bear on the surface over an increasing part and ultimately over the whole of their height. Fig. 1 shows the tube suspending apparatus in a "no load" position, the lower members of the teeth 53 only engaging the surface 50. The body 40 is accommodated in the casing head 10 which has a tapered seat 22 on which a taper surface 41 bears when the load is applied. A packing 64, between rings 60, 66, is secured to the body 40 by bolts 73, the upper ring being bevelled at 70 to be engaged by lockscrews 71. The lower ring 60 seats on the seat 22 so that when the body 40 is pulled down by the load, the body 40 separates from the ring 60 and the bolts 73 pull down the ring 66 to compress the packing 64. The load forces down the slips to distort the lower parts of the body 40 outwardly, so that the surface 50 ultimately is strained to conform with the slope of the slips. Recesses 43 in the body 40 ensure that flow to and from ports 35, 36 is unobstructed. The differential taper of the slips 51 and the surface 50 is small and has been exaggerated in the drawing for clarity. A differential taper of a few degrees, usually about one degree, is mentioned.
