Abstract
Apparatus for effecting distillation under <PICT:0869990/III/1> <PICT:0869990/III/2> <PICT:0869990/III/3> <PICT:0869990/III/4> vacuum (e.g. 10-2 mm. Hg. and below) comprises a rotatable evaporation surface, formed by the inner surface of a rotatable, substantially horizontal, hollow cylinder or truncated cone, enclosing a hollow space and a condensation surface arranged therein; a distilland reservoir within the hollow space and bounded by a portion of the evaporation surface so that during each complete revolution the entire evaporation surface is freshly wetted in the reservoir and passes the condensation surface; and means for the removal of distillate condensed on the condensation surface. Referring to Fig. 2 which is a sectional view along the horizontal axis, casing 1 encloses a rotatable cylinder 5, the interior face of which constitutes evaporation surface 10, heated by heating element 16. Condensation surface 20 is internally cooled by a cooling medium, e.g. water, introduced via line 22. Distillate condensed on the surface 20 collects in troughs 26 and is removed by line 28. The distilland reservoir is designated 14. The apparatus may be used for fractional distillation by heating various bands of the evaporation surface to different temperatures and providing separate condensation surfaces and collecting means for each. Two such bands are shown in the sectional view provided by Fig. 1 which also shows the means 4 for rotating the evaporation surface, distilland inlet 13, cooling medium discharge line 24 and vacuum line 3. Figs. 3 and 4 illustrate skimmer members which may be used to restrain the distilland and distribute it evenly over the evaporation surface, the disposition thereof in Fig. 4 being appropriate to a high speed of rotation, e.g. 5,000 r.p.m. The apparatus is particularly suitable for molecular distillation, wherein the distance between the evaporation and condensation surfaces is less than the mean free path of the vapour molecules.
