Abstract

The invention comprises compounds of the formula: <FORM:0869485/IV (b)/1> where R1-R6 are hydrogen, halogen or alkyl and R5 and R6 may also be alkoxy, and R7-R12 are hydrogen, halogen, unsubstituted or substituted alkyl, alkoxyalkyl or unsubstituted or substituted aryl groups, and R9 and R10 may be combined to form a cycloaliphatic ring, and their preparation by reacting an appropriate 1,3-dioxepene-5 with an appropriate cyclopentadiene or halocyclopentadiene by the Diels-Alder reaction, or by further halogenation of a compound of the above formula. Alternatively, butenediol diacetate is reacted with an appropriate cyclopentadiene, the resulting ester saponified to the diol, and the latter reacted with an appropriate aldehyde or ketone or functional derivative thereof. Specified and/or exemplified reactants are: 1,3-dioxepene-5 and its derivatives 2-methyl-, 2-isopropyl-, 2-hexyl-, 2-(21-methoxyethyl)-, 2-(21-methylthioethyl-, 2-(31-propionic acid methyl ester)-, 4,7-dimethyl-, 2,2-dimethyl-, 2,2-tetramethylene-, 2,2-pentamethylene, 2-phenyl-, 2-(p-chlorophenyl)-, and 2-(p-methoxyphenyl)-1,3-dioxepene-5; and cyclopentadiene and its derivatives 1-tert-butyl-, hexachloro-, pentachloro-, tetrachloro-, 1,2,3,4-tetrachloro-5,5-dimethoxy-, difluorotetrachloro-, difluorodichloro- and hexabromo cyclopentadiene. The compounds of the above formula are of use as pesticides (see Group VI). Substituted alkyl groups which are specified are 2-methoxyethyl, 2-methylthioethyl, and 3-propionic acid methyl ester (carbomethoxyethyl); substituted aryl groups which are specified are p-chlorophenyl and p-methoxyphenyl; these all correspond with R9.
