869,419. Electrophotographic processes; photomechanical printing plates. AUSTRALIA, DEPARTMENT OF SUPPLY. June 6, 1957 [June 27, 1956], No. 18037/57. Drawings to Specification. Class 98(2) [Also in Group XVI] Printing blocks, printed circuits and the like are prepared by forming an electrostatic latent image on a film comprising a photoconductor suspended in an electrically insulating base and mounted on a backing, developing said image with a particulate developer substance coated with a resist agent and suspended in an electrically insulating liquid, removing the photoconductor layer from the undeveloped areas and etching the backing so exposed. The photoconductor layer may comprise zinc oxide suspended in an alkyd resin. The developer may comprise aluminium powder coated with Rhodene (a modified alkyd resin) made into a paste with toluene or turpentine and suspended in an insulating liquid. Alternatively, boiled linseed oil may be used as a resist agent. Other developer powders specified are carbon, sulphur, red lead, iron oxide or zinc oxide. The backing may be of zinc or copper and it may be etched with nitric acid or ferric chloride solution respectively. A single solvent may be used to remove the undeveloped areas of the photoconductive layer and for the etching step. The residual photoconductive material and developed image may be removed after the etching step, if desired.
