Abstract

869,335. Elastic-fluid turbines. PARSONS & MARINE ENGINEERING TURBINE RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT ASSOCIATION. Aug. 8, 1958 [Dec. 13, 1957], No. 19686/60. Divided out of 863,036. Class 110 (3). To increase the resistance of turbine blades to deflection relative to each other in a direction parallel to the rotor axis, web members extend across the width of each blade and are secured to the blades, intermediate the blade tips and roots, by at least two pins or by at least one projection of non-circular cross-section, whereby the web members are prevented from being angularly displaced about a circumferential axis. In one embodiment of the invention, Figs. 1 and 3, the web member is constituted by metal pressings 8 brazed or otherwise connected together and having channel-shaped outer edges which fit over pins 2a, 3a secured therein. The pins pass through apertures in the blades and are secured in the ends of the adjacent web member. The web members are shaped to fit between the blades and are brazed or otherwise secured thereto. In the embodiment shown in Figs. 7 and 8, the rigid web member 22 has hollow formations 24 secured to the blades by pins, while fairings 25a are secured to the crossmember 23. In a third embodiment, see Fig. 6, each web member 10 is of aerofoil section and is provided with non-circular bosses or dogs 11 which engage with recesses formed in the blades. Pins 14 engage in the bores 12 formed in the bosses and extend into bores 15 in the adjacent web member. Alternatively two or more sets of hollow bosses, located out of line, may be provided. In a modification the bosses are dispensed with and two sets of holes are provided in the web member to accommodate the blade engaging pins.
