Abstract

869,101. Valves. HAWKER SIDDELEY NUCLEAR POWER CO. Ltd. Nov. 11, 1959 [Nov. 11, 1958], No. 36196/58. Class 135. A fluid-control valve comprises a casing 1, a valve seat 4 separating flow-pipes 2, 3, a valve member 5 operated by a control shaft 7, the latter passing through a passage 21, flexible sealing means 17, 18 secured to the shaft and the casing to seal the passage, and cooling means surrounding the passage whereby in the event of failure of the flexible sealing means fluid reaching the passage will solidify therein around the shaft to thereby seal the passage. As shown applied to sealing molten metal such as radio-active bismuth flowing along the pipes 2, 3, the sealing means is in the form of two bellows 17, 18, both secured to the casing and to the valve 5 and shaft 7 respectively; to balance the pressure acting on the bellows, gas may be fed through conduits 19, 20. In the event of failure of both bellows, the molten metal flows into the passage 21 where, due to the provision of cooling fins 22 formed on the casing, the metal solidifies, thereby preventing further leakage. An indicator, in the form of a sparking plug 22, is provided in order that when the electrodes are shorted-out by the leaking molten metal, an audible and/or visual signal is given.
