Abstract

Shaped articles, such, as sleeves or tiles, for use in the casting of metals are made from a mixture of an exothermic material and wood pulp, paper pulp or cellulosic fibre. In an example, 90 parts by weight of wood pulp are mixed with 10 parts of a specified exothermic material and a binder and formed into tiles suitable for use in the casting of aluminium and low melting point alloys. In a further example, 10 parts by weight of paper pulp are mixed with 90 parts of the same exothermic material and a binder and formed into sleeves for use in the casting of stainless steel at 1600 DEG C.
