[Also in Group XXXVIII] In a sprinkler supervisory system a flexible vane 70 with a thickened or semi-rigid portion preferably formed as ribs 72 is inserted into a water supply conduit through a composite water-tight housing 10, 22 secured to the conduit 16 by a U-bolt. Any substantial flow of water, due, for example, to the opening of a sprinkler head, causes the vane 70 to be displaced about its pivot 64 until its shank 62 abuts against the neck 26 of the housing 22, the vane itself bending under the water-pressure until it lies against the side of the conduit, as shown at 60. The displacement of the shank 62 moves a rod 42 and thus releases a delay switch 56 which, after a predetermined time, closes contacts 57 to send a signal to a central station. Small pressure changes in the supply mains cause a flow which is insufficient to cause the delay switch 56 to close its contacts 57 before pressure on both sides of the vane 70 is equalized and a spring 44 restores the vane 70 to its normal vertical position. The speedy equalization of pressure is aided by a slight clearance between the vane 70 and the conduit 16 and by the flexibility, particularly of the edge portion, of the vane 70. The vane 70 is preferably made of polyethylene and because of its flexibility may be withdrawn for inspection without removing the housings 10, 22.
