Abstract

868,152. Winding and coiling wire. BRITISH INSULATED CALLENDER'S CABLES Ltd. Feb. 24, 1960 [Feb. 24; 1959; Dec. 18, 1959], Nos. 6348/59 and 43202/59. Class 83 (4). Apparatus for coiling wire comprises a stationary ring wall whose internal surface forms an endless track, a pulley which under operating conditions is driven along the track, and means for leading wire substantially axially towards the centre of the track and then towards and on to that part of the pulley that is approaching the track, whereby as the pulley rolls along its track it momentarily traps between it and the track successive elemental lengths of wire and draws the wire through the device, at the same time imparting a curvature to it. Wire passes around pulleys 3, 4, the pulley 3 being movable in dependence on the tension in the wire to control the speed of the wire coiling means, down a rotary hollow shaft 10, carrying a flyer 12 at its lower end, around a pulley 19 on the flyer 12, then between a rubber-rimmed roller 15 and a stationary cylindrical track 9. The wire is thereby curved and then passes through a guide tube 21 on the flyer 12. This tube 21 is curved in the same sense as the pulley surface, adjacent thereto, then is curved in the reverse sense and the remainder curves downwardly. The wire then falls in suitable coils into a container 6, rotated slowly about an axis, slightly displaced from the axis of the flyer 12, by a table 41 driven through clutch means 43 from the drive 30 to the flyer 12. A motor 27 drives the means 30 through an infinitely variable gear 28 controlled by speed control 40 actuated by chains 39, 36 and 34 connected to the movable pulleys 3 so that variation in tension of the wire passing over the pulleys 3, 4 varies the speed of the machine in a way to maintain the tension constant. While containers 6 are being changed, wire being delivered from the guide tube 21 is supported temporarily on a platform 44 moved laterally on guides 49 to a position beneath the coiler. A stop 51 pivoted to the machine frame serves, when in a vertical position to sweep accumulated coils into the container 6 as the platform 44 is withdrawn, the stop 51 being held horizontal during filling of the container 6 by pins on the platform 44. Alternatively, Fig. 7, the coils may be temporarily supported by fingers 61 swung to a position under the coiler by a chain 66 and lever 67. The track 9 may be of elliptical form or conical or conoidal in which latter cases the pulley 15 may be suitably tapered. The axis of the track may be horizontal.
