A two-column machine tool comprises a cross-beam 8 having at least one end projecting outwardly beyond a main column 4 and supported by an auxiliary column 5. The main and auxiliary column(s) may be connected by braces 7. Means may project from the rear of the beam to enable it to be clamped to the rear faces of the columns. Feed-screws in the auxiliary and/or main columns may raise and lower the beam and have interconnected compensating means to ensure that the interengaging nuts always remain aligned.
